The Client, with a young family, had recently moved to a house with an existing swimming pool that they found they were not using as it was hard to access, had no space around it to sit or entertain. The pool was showing its age and, with younger children, there were some concerns with safety.

What they wanted was an area they could enjoy, relax, sit and eat and take in the views over the rest of the garden and to the country side beyond.

Although the property was period and the existing garden is quite traditional. It was decided that a more contemporary approach was needed for the area around the pool. Different from the rest of the garden marking a new era in the history of the property and also reflecting the changes inside the house to more modern living.

Using traditional materials and methods such as dry stone walling but with the contemporary edge and detail of gabion cages helped ease the transition from old to new

The pool is sited on sloping ground which was particularly challenging but gave the opportunity to utilise the elevated hight and expose views and promote a feeling of space. A sunken entertaining area working with the sloping ground would give this space a more intimate feel.

As the pool was located a distance away from the house so a studio/lifestyle space was added

Finally, lighting was to play a large part in highlighting the features, promoting the ambience and enabling the use as an entertaining space to continue into the evening
